The George, Mumbles

The George, Mumbles

We’re big fans of a carvery in this household and think the best one in Swansea is The Buck Inn in Ponlliw, by a country mile. So when I heard that the owners of it had taken over the super popular venue, The George in Mumbles, I got pretty excited we were going to get a really good Sunday Roast this side of Swansea.

I messaged to ask if there would be a carvery and was told there isn’t (there’s one in The Mermaid though), but there is a Sunday roast alongside its other menus, which I finally got to try out today – I have opinions!

First off, let’s talk about the location and the new interior. If you Google The George, you might get confused as the first thing that comes up is ‘MK at the George’ – the MK being Michael Knight who ran it before moving on to Venue 42 recently (I’ve not had a chance to try it out yet, but I’ve seen the new menu, and its seafood-heavy and looks absolutely incredible) – rather than the venue it is now.

I feel a bit sorry for the new owners about this, because getting to the top of Google, so they can properly promote their business is a hard thing to do, but really important. Hopefully, they can work with the past owners on that so the right business hits the top stop on Google not to confuse customers.

But anyway, if you aren’t from the area, you’ll find The George at 706 Mumbles Road, Mumbles, Swansea, SA3 4EH – which is right in the heart of Mumbles, with a stunning view of the bay.

I’ve rambled on about the roast already, but actually, the real selling point of The George is the authentic Carribean food. The vibe is beachy, with a touch of Caribbean paradise with palm tree motifs, dried grass vases etc – it’s subtle, not too “themey” and generally a very nice place to spend some time.

What I really like about the interior is how big, bright and open it is – you don’t feel squeezed in at all. You can eat outside on the balcony if you fancy a bit of alfresco dining.

There’s some parking outside, in fact, more than usual, with some free parking bays recently being added – but honestly, if you’re going on a nice sunny day, the whole of Mumbles is rammed, so make sure you leave yourself some time to drive around to find a spot, or park further out and walk in on the promenade.

The George, Mumbles Menu

Ok – forgive the food pictures, they could be better and I have none of the actual Caribbean food which is what The George (and The Buck) is known for. I will get back there and order a few dishes so I can do a proper review of the main Caribbean menu, but all I can say for now is – it looked and smelled absolutely stunning. I just noticed that on a Wednesday, if you order from the Carribean menu, you get a free cocktail – so I’ll 100% be taking them up on that offer.

It also has a standard ‘pub’ menu too. Your best bet is to follow their Facebook page which has all their different menus, and offers.

The George Sunday Roast Dinner

I ordered the roast and it was very impressive. You get the choice of two meats – and I went with beef and turkey breast. Trust me when I say you get a ton of meat – the picture below doesn’t do it justice, but you get thick, tender pieces of meat – far more than any other place doing a roast I can think of.

The beef genuinely melted in the mouth – I know people throw out that phrase all the time – but you don’t need a knife to cut through it, it’s that tender. The turkey was buttery and well seasoned. Oh, and the gravy is perfect – packed with flavour and the right thickness.

You get a shared plate with the vegetables which you split with your table, which includes a massive, super cheesy and delicious cauliflower cheese. I don’t love a sharing board if I’m being honest, preferring my veg to just be on my plate – but it’s fashionable, I guess, so I get why they do it.

If you’re looking to try out something a bit different in Mumbles – or want a really solid roast – give The George a go. They’re new a new independent business and could do with local support.
